There’s no better time to roll the windows down than summer time in New England! As the days start to get warmer, it’s time to load up the car, and hit the road. From mountain drives and coastal towns to amusement parks and scenic trails, some of the best summer destinations are right in our own neighborhoods.

Before you head out on your next adventure, make sure your vehicle is ready for the miles ahead. A quick vehicle check can help you avoid unexpected breakdowns and keep your summer road trip focused on fun — not roadside repairs.

Here are some of our favorite New England road trip destinations for 2026, along with simple car care tips to help get you there confidently.

Maine Road Trip Destinations

Boothbay & Boothbay Harbor

Spend the day exploring the beautiful coastal charm of Boothbay Harbor. Visit the famous Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and discover the larger-than-life “Guardians of the Seeds” sculptures tucked throughout the grounds. Afterward, enjoy waterfront dining at Boathouse Bistro while taking in harbor views.

Kennebunkport

Kennebunkport is a classic New England summer stop. Relax at Goose Rocks Beach, browse local shops downtown, and cool off with ice cream from Rococo Ice Cream. It’s the perfect mix of coastal scenery and small-town charm.

Vermont Road Trip Destinations

Stowe

Drive Vermont’s famous Smugglers’ Notch Road through the Green Mountains and stop for a hike to Sterling Pond. Afterward, explore downtown Stowe’s shops, restaurants, and scenic views, or take a walk or bike ride along the Stowe Recreation Path.

Shelburne

Shelburne offers something for everyone. Walk scenic trails at Shelburne Farms overlooking Lake Champlain, visit the Children’s Farmyard, or try hands-on experiences like butter making and milking demonstrations. Nearby, the Shelburne Museum features beautiful gardens, historic buildings, and the famous steamboat Ticonderoga.

New Hampshire Road Trip Destinations

Kancamagus Highway

One of New England’s most scenic drives, the Kancamagus Highway winds through the White Mountains with breathtaking overlooks and mountain views. Stop at Lower Falls for swimming, relaxing, or a picnic along the river.

Bretton Woods

Take a ride on the Mount Washington Cog Railway for unforgettable views above the clouds, then head to the Skyway Gondola and Rosebrook Lodge for lunch with mountain scenery. Nearby Crawford Notch State Park offers additional hiking and sightseeing opportunities.

Massachusetts Road Trip Destinations

Rockport

Walk along Bearskin Neck exploring local shops, galleries, and harbor views. Don’t miss Motif No. 1 — one of the most painted buildings in America. Finish the evening with waterfront dining and a sunset walk on Front Beach.

The Berkshires

Adventure seekers can ride the Catamount Zip Tour, one of the longest ziplines in the United States, reaching speeds up to 55 mph. The Berkshires also offer hiking, scenic chairlift rides, breweries, and charming towns like Great Barrington.

Connecticut Road Trip Destinations

Mystic

Mystic combines family fun with classic coastal New England charm. Visit the Mystic Aquarium to see beluga whales and sea lions, then explore the shops, bookstores, restaurants, and famous drawbridge downtown.

Lake Compounce

Spend the day at America’s oldest continuously operating amusement park. With roller coasters, water slides, classic rides, and Connecticut’s largest water park, Lake Compounce is packed with summer fun for the whole family.

Road Trip Ready: Car Care Tips Before You Go

A summer road trip starts with a reliable vehicle. Before heading out, take a few minutes to check these important systems:

Check Your Tires: Inspect your tire tread depth and tire pressure, and look for uneven wear that could signal alignment issues. If your TPMS light has been on, have your tires inspected before your trip to help avoid preventable flats.

Inspect Your Brakes: Pay attention to how your brakes feel while driving. Vibrations, pulling, unusual smells, or extra stopping distance can all point to brake issues that should be inspected before a long drive.

Top Off Fluids: Check your engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid levels. Summer heat can put additional stress on your vehicle, especially during long drives.

Test Your Battery: Summer heat can be hard on batteries. If your battery is more than 4–5 years old or your vehicle has been slow to start, it may be time for a battery test.

Improve Fuel Efficiency: Proper tire inflation, clean air filters, and regular maintenance can help improve fuel economy and keep your road trip running efficiently.

Check Wipers & Lights: Summer storms can roll in quickly. Make sure your windshield wipers, headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are all working properly.

Pack an Emergency Kit: It’s always smart to travel with jumper cables, flashlights, chargers, water, snacks, and basic emergency supplies — just in case.

Don’t Forget Your Spare Tire: Check the pressure and condition of your spare tire before leaving. Many drivers forget about it until they actually need it.

All-Season

All-Season tires are versatile and suitable for warm and cool climates, but not recommended for extreme hot or cold weather conditions because of specific rubber components.

All-Weather

Like their name suggests, all-weather tires are versatile and can perform well in a variety of weather conditions and can be severe snow-rated.

All-Terrain

With bigger treads than traditional all-season tires, all-terrain tires allow for both on and off-roading capabilities.

Winter

Winter tires are manufactured to perform well in snow, ice, sleet and other cold weather conditions. Winter tires are typically soft, with an intricate grooved tread pattern — made for holding compacted snow and creating traction — and are severe snow-rated.
