Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)

Schedule Service

An anti-lock brake system (ABS) helps prevent your wheels from locking during heavy braking, which prevents your vehicle from skidding or hydroplaning.

To ensure your safety, any sense that something may not be right when braking should always be checked out immediately. At VIP, our Certified Automotive Professionals will check your brakes and advise you of any work that needs to be done.

  • VIP will check your brakes for FREE (If further diagnostics are needed, regular diagnostic fees will apply)
  • VIP offers a warranty on most installed parts.
  • VIP stands behind our work with a labor warranty that matches the warranty on the installed part.

When You May Need ABS System Repair

If you experience any of the following indicators of possible ABS system failure, immediately call VIP. We will quickly get you in.

  • Your vehicle skids or hydroplanes during heavy braking
  • You need to brake harder and harder to slow or stop
  • The ABS light on your dashboard is on
  • Pressing on your brake pedal doesn’t stop your vehicle

How to Drive With ABS

Driving a vehicle equipped with ABS requires a different technique than driving one that doesn’t.

  • Maintain firm and continuous pressure on the brake while steering
  • Avoid pumping the brake, even if the brake pedal is pulsating. It does so when the ABS is activated. If you pump the brake, it turns the ABS system off.

FAQs

  • My ABS light is on. Is it still safe to keep driving?

Your regular brakes are likely to still work, but your ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) may not. Your ABS keeps your wheels from locking up on hard stops. It’s a safety feature you don’t want to be without especially in the wet and icy conditions of New England. If your ABS light is on, get it checked out soon. At VIP, we’ll check your brake system for free.

  • What does the ABS system actually do and why does it matter?

The ABS system in your vehicle keeps your wheels from locking up during heavy braking which helps you stay in control and avoid skidding or hydroplaning. Without it working properly, a hard stop, especially on a wet road, can go sideways fast. It’s one of the most important safety systems on your vehicle.

  • My brakes feel like they’re pulsating or vibrating when I stop, is that an ABS problem?

If you’re feeling a pulsating when you’re braking hard, then that’s normal beause it means the ABS kicked in. However, if you’re feeling vibration and/or pulsating on normal stops that’s different and it’s worth getting checked out. Our Certified Automotive Professionals will take a look and let you know if there’s anything to be concerned about. At VIP, we offer free brake checks every day.

  • Should I pump my brakes if ABS activates?

No, and it’s important to know that. When the ABS system activates, keep firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal and steer normlly. Pumping your brakes in an ABS vehicle will actually turn the ABS system off which defeats the whole purpose. Trust your ABS system and let it work as intended. If you ever have a question if your ABS or brake system are working normally, turn to your local VIP Tires & Service and our team of Certified Automotive Professionals will be happy to take a look.

  • How much does it cost to fix an ABS system issue?

It depends on what might be causing the issue because a faulty speed sensor is different than a failing ABS module. That why, at VIP, we start with a free brake check to see what’s actually going on with your ABS system and then can give you a free estimate so you know what repairs are necessary and how much it’ll cost before the work is done.

All-Season

All-Season tires are versatile and suitable for warm and cool climates, but not recommended for extreme hot or cold weather conditions because of specific rubber components.

All-Weather

Like their name suggests, all-weather tires are versatile and can perform well in a variety of weather conditions and can be severe snow-rated.

All-Terrain

With bigger treads than traditional all-season tires, all-terrain tires allow for both on and off-roading capabilities.

Winter

Winter tires are manufactured to perform well in snow, ice, sleet and other cold weather conditions. Winter tires are typically soft, with an intricate grooved tread pattern — made for holding compacted snow and creating traction — and are severe snow-rated.
