For most drivers, no, Maine does not require emissions testing or a smog check. However, there is one notable exception: vehicles registered in Cumberland County are required to undergo an emissions test.

There are 14 core systems that are checked during a Maine state inspection: brakes, steering & suspension, tires & wheels, lighting system (such as head lights, break lights, turn signals), glass & mirrors, wipers and systems necessary for visibility, exhaust & fuel systems, body, chassis, horn, speedometer & odometer, seat belts & airbags, electrical systems, OBD (on-board diagnostics), and the license plate. All of these core systems must be evaluated for safety and compliance once a year.

Vehicles that fail inspection will not be issued an inspection sticker. The shop that performed the inspection should give you a list of the needed repairs that are specific to the 14 core systems needed to pass the Maine state inspection. You’ll need to fix those items before the car can be reinspected. Some locations offer a free reinspect if you come back within 30 days of your initial inspection. Driving without a valid inspection sticker could result in a fine.

Depending on the technician, timing, age of the vehicle, and other factors, it can take up to one hour to perform a thorough inspection. Some vehicles and technicians may take less time, but it’s good to budget your time for at least one hour.

As of 2026, the current cost for a Maine state inspection is $12.50. If your vehicle is registered in Cumberland County it also requires an emissions test, which brings the cost to $18.50.

Yes, if the vehicle is registered as an antique and meets state criteria it is exempt from Maine state inspection requirements.

Pass/Fail means that even if just one item fails on your inspection, your vehicle is considered failed. Whether your vehicle passes or fails, you’re still required to pay the inspection fee. However, at VIP, if you bring your vehicle back to us within 30 days with your issues addressed, we’ll reinspect for free and issue your sticker.

If you live in Maine, Massachusetts, or Vermont, then yes, your state requires annual vehicle safety inspections. Connecticut does not require annual or periodic safety inspections, but they do require biennial emissions testing. New Hampshire has repealed their state inspection law and no longer requires passenger vehicles to have an annual safety inspection. However, commercial vehicles are still required to have a safety inspection to operate in New Hamphire.

State inspection costs vary from state to state. In Maine, it can range from $12.50 – $18.50. In Vermont, it’s anywhere between $50- $75 (at VIP we charge $60 for Vermont State Inspections). In Massachusetts it varies as well, but VIP does not offer MA state inspections. New Hampshire and Connecticut do not require annual inspections and thus do not have a cost, but CT emissions testing is $20.

At VIP, we give you 30 days to address the issues. Return to us in that timeand we will reinspect your vehicle for free so you can get your sticker.

For most inspection stickers, the month that the inspection was performed is notched. That tells you the month you must get a state inspection performed. There are no grace periods for inspections: if you do not have your vehicle inspected in the month that your sticker indicates, then you are in violation of the state law and can be ticketed or fined.

While you can drive with an expired inspection sticker, it’s not recommended. There are penalties and fines for driving without a valid sticker. In Maine, fines can generally range between $25 – $250. In some rare instances, it could be classified as a Class E crime which carries steeper fines of up to $500 or jail time. In Massachusetts, your first offense is a flat $40 fine, however, because it counts as a moving violation, it could increase your auto insurance rates. If your fine is unpaid, it can escalate to a suspended driver’s license or vehicle registration. Vermont institutes an initial civil penalty which is no more than $5 if you are cited within 14 days of your sticker expiring. However, if your sticker expired more than 14 days ago, your fine will range between $105 – $125 and can scale up to $250 depending on the specific instances of the violation.
