Why Get an Annual Vehicle Inspection?

While the state of New Hampshire no longer requires annual safety inspections for most passenger vehicles, drivers are still legally responsible for ensuring their vehicles are safe to operate. Although the state’s vehicle inspection program has been suspended and is set to expire on January 31, 2026, New Hampshire’s vehicle safety laws remain in effect. This includes ensuring that your vehicle complies with:

  • Rules about fuel and exhaust leaks, and unsafe vehicles conditions including body and chassis defects
  • Requirements for working brakes, lights, tires, and other essential equipment
  • Noise and exhaust laws for vehicles and motorcycles

Driving a vehicle with an obvious defect — including excessive rust, structural damage, loose components, and other body defects — can result in a ticket or a misdemeanor offense, which could carry a fine and other penalties. Regular inspections can help identify potential issues early, keeping your vehicle safe, reliable, and performing at its best.

Proactively inspecting your vehicle makes good safety and financial sense. All parts wear over time, and leaving a minor issue unaddressed can turn into a major problem down the road. For example, ignoring a loose ball joint for too long could mean your tire completely disconnects while driving. A catastrophic failure can jeopardize your safety, endanger others on the road, and result in costly vehicle damage.

If you relied on the New Hampshire state inspection as your sign for a regular checkup, be sure to schedule an Advanced Multi-Point Inspection (MPI) at your local VIP location. It provides peace of mind by ensuring your vehicle’s key components are inspected and any potential safety concerns are identified.

The image captures a professional interaction in an auto repair shop, featuring a mechanic and a customer. The mechanic, wearing a blue uniform with a VIP Tires & Service logo, is explaining the details on a clipboard to the female customer. They are standing in a well-equipped garage with a car raised on a lift in the background. This scene portrays a typical customer service situation in the automotive industry, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and expert advice in customer interactions.
"An advanced multipoint inspection of your vehicle helps to catch the small things before they become major, more costly issues or leave you stranded roadside in an unsafe position. It can also help you maintain the health and maintenance of your vehicle, preventing shortened life and protecting your investment for years to come." Justin Saba, Service Manager Stratham, NH

FAQs

  • Do commercial vehicles still need inspections in New Hampshire?

Yes, commercial vehicles still need inspections in New Hampshire. The elimination of the New Hampshire inspection primarily affects passenger cars. The U.S. Department of Transportation still requires that commercial motor vehicles be inspected every 12 months by a qualified inspector.

  • Do I still need to register my vehicle in New Hampshire?

If you’re a resident of New Hampshire, the annual vehicle registration process has not changed. You will still need to complete your annual registration during your birthday month.

  • Does my state require a vehicle inspection?

If you live in Maine, Massachusetts, or Vermont, then yes, your state requires annual vehicle safety inspections. Connecticut does not require annual or periodic safety inspections, but they do require biennial emissions testing. New Hampshire has repealed their state inspection law and no longer requires passenger vehicles to have an annual safety inspection. However, commercial vehicles are still required to have a safety inspection to operate in New Hamphire.

  • How often do I need to get my car inspected?

It depends on the New England state you live in: Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont require annual safety inspections. Connecticut and New Hampshire do not require annual safety inspections.

  • What does a state inspection check for?

Each state has different requirements for what is inspected during an annual safety inspection. You should refer to your state government page for more in-depth information.

  • How much does a state inspection cost?

State inspection costs vary from state to state. In Maine, it can range from $12.50 – $18.50. In Vermont, it’s anywhere between $50- $75 (at VIP we charge $60 for Vermont State Inspections). In Massachusetts it varies as well, but VIP does not offer MA state inspections. New Hampshire and Connecticut do not require annual inspections and thus do not have a cost, but CT emissions testing is $20.

  • What happens if my vehicle fails inspection?

If your vehicle fails inspection, the technician who performed your inspection will provide you with a list of items that need to be addressed before the vehicle can pass. At VIP, we give you 30 days to address the issues. Return to us in that timeand we will reinspect your vehicle for free so you can get your sticker.

  • How do I know when my inspection sticker expires?

For most inspection stickers, the month that the inspection was performed is notched. That tells you the month you must get a state inspection performed. There are no grace periods for inspections: if you do not have your vehicle inspected in the month that your sticker indicates, then you are in violation of the state law and can be ticketed or fined.

  • Are NH state inspections still required?

Short answer is no. The longer answer is that a federal court order suspending the inspection program and inspection stations are no longer authorized to issue stickers. However, the state remains very clear that vehicle safety laws are still in affect and do apply to passenger vehicles. This means that, while a cop cannot pull you over for not having an inspection sticker, they can still pull you over for an obvious safety violation. While New Hampshire State Inspections law might have changed, your safety hasn’t, and so VIP still recommends an annual vehicle inspection. Commercial vehicles are still required by NH state law to obtain state inspections. This situation is still developing so if you have further questions or specific gudiance, we recommend visiting the NH DMV page: https://www.dmv.nh.gov/vehicles-boats-and-titles/inspections-emissions

  • Can I drive with an expired sticker?

While you can drive with an expired inspection sticker, it’s not recommended. There are penalties and fines for driving without a valid sticker. In Maine, fines can generally range between $25 – $250. In some rare instances, it could be classified as a Class E crime which carries steeper fines of up to $500 or jail time. In Massachusetts, your first offense is a flat $40 fine, however, because it counts as a moving violation, it could increase your auto insurance rates. If your fine is unpaid, it can escalate to a suspended driver’s license or vehicle registration. Vermont institutes an initial civil penalty which is no more than $5 if you are cited within 14 days of your sticker expiring. However, if your sticker expired more than 14 days ago, your fine will range between $105 – $125 and can scale up to $250 depending on the specific instances of the violation.

  • Why did New Hampshire get rid of vehicle inspections?

It was part of the New Hampshire’s two-year budget agreement in June of 2025 that lawmakers repealed the annual safety and emissions inspection. The repeal was originally set to go into effect on January 31, 2026.

  • Do I still need to get my car inspected if my sticker is about to expire?

No, legally, you do not need to have your vehicle inspected in New Hampshire. However, it’s still recommended to have an annual inspection to identify safety concerns and natural wear and tear on the vehicle. Regular inspections will save money in the long run if problems are caught early.

  • Do commercial vehicles still need inspections in NH?

Yes, commercial vehicles are still required to have state inspection stickers and must have an annual inspection.

  • If inspections aren’t required anymore, do I still need to keep my car safe?

Yes! Under current New Hampshire law, drivers are still responsible for ensuring that any vehicle they drive in New Hampshire is safe to operate, regardless of the inspection program’s status. You’re still required to have safe tires, working brakes and lights, no fuel leaks or exhaust/muffler leaks, windshield and wipers, mirrors, and a functional horn and defroster.

  • Do I need to inspect my vehicle in New Hampshire?

No, you do not currently need to get your passenger vehicle inspected in New Hampshire. Inspection stations in New Hampshire are no longer authorized to issue state inspection stickers, and vehicles are not required to obtain an annual state inspection.

  • Can I drive in New Hampshire without a state inspection?

If you are a New Hampshire resident, then yes, you can drive in New Hampshire without a state inspection. If you are a resident from another state driving through New Hampshire, you’re still accountable for your home state’s inspection requirements. In all cases, your vehicle still must meet New Hampshire state safety standards.

  • What happens if you don’t inspect your car in New Hampshire?

Although annual inspections are no longer required on passenger vehicles, New Hampshire’s car safety standards remain in full force. It is legal to not have an inspection sticker, but it is illegal to operate a vehicle found to be unsafe or defective. If your vehicle is found to be unsafe to operate, you will be fined and risk jail time.
