For most inspection stickers, the month that the inspection was performed is notched. That tells you the month you must get a state inspection performed. However, the state remains very clear that vehicle safety laws are still in affect and do apply to passenger vehicles. While you can drive with an expired inspection sticker, it’s not recommended. There are penalties and fines for driving without a valid sticker. In Maine, fines can generally range between $25 – $250. In some rare instances, it could be classified as a Class E crime which carries steeper fines of up to $500 or jail time. In Massachusetts, your first offense is a flat $40 fine, however, because it counts as a moving violation, it could increase your auto insurance rates. If your fine is unpaid, it can escalate to a suspended driver’s license or vehicle registration. Vermont institutes an initial civil penalty which is no more than $5 if you are cited within 14 days of your sticker expiring. However, if your sticker expired more than 14 days ago, your fine will range between $105 – $125 and can scale up to $250 depending on the specific instances of the violation.

It was part of the New Hampshire’s two-year budget agreement in June of 2025 that lawmakers repealed the annual safety and emissions inspection. The repeal was originally set to go into effect on January 31, 2026.
