Engine Heating & Cooling Systems

Schedule Service

If your vehicle’s heating and cooling systems are malfunctioning, it can result in your engine overheating or not running as fuel efficiently and cleanly as it should. If your engine is too hot for too long, it may become seriously damaged.

Preventive maintenance is key to keeping your vehicle’s heating and cooling systems functioning correctly. Your VIP Certified Automotive Professional will check the water and coolant level in your vehicle’s radiator, inspect its cooling system for leaks, and check its thermostat and hoses.

  • VIP offers a warranty on most installed parts.
  • VIP stands behind our work with a labor warranty that matches the warranty on installed parts.

What to Do If Your Engine Overheats

engine over-heating

If your engine temperature warning light goes on, doing the following may help:

  • Shut off your air conditioner and open your windows
  • If engine overheating continues, turn on your heater and blower
  • If stopped in traffic, shift to neutral or park and rev the engine slightly

If your engine’s temperature continues to rise:

  • Safely drive to the right side of the road
  • Stop your vehicle
  • Turn off the engine
  • Open the hood and wait for the engine to cool off
  • Do NOT open the radiator cap or add water until the engine is completely cooled

Components of Heating & Cooling Systems

Your vehicle’s heating and cooling systems are made up of multiple components. All must be in perfect condition to work well.

  • Radiator
  • Fan

FAQs

  • How do I know if I have a coolant leak?

Signs of a coolant leak include puddles of bright green, orange, or pink fluid where you park, a coolant level that keeps dropping between refills, or an engine running hotter than normal. If you spot that fluid, clean it up right away. It is highly poisonous to animals and young children. The sooner you catch a coolant leak, the better your chances of avoiding a serious cooling system failure.

  • I have a coolant leak and I collected the coolant but I don’t know what to do with it.

Antifreeze and coolant are toxic to animals and children and harmful to the environment if disposed of improperly. At VIP, we accept up to four gallons per visit for free recycling with no appointment necessary.

  • What parts of the cooling system does VIP inspect and service?

VIP’s cooling system service covers your entire system — radiator, cooling fan, thermostat, water pump, and all connecting hoses — to make sure every component is working together to keep your engine at the right temperature. If something’s worn or leaking, we’ll tell you exactly what it is and get your written approval before moving forward with any repairs.

  • Can driving with an overheating engine cause permanent damage?

Driving with an overheating engine can absolutely cause permanent damage, and it can happen faster than you’d expect. Sustained overheating can warp cylinder heads, damage gaskets, and lead to engine failure. This is one problem that you want looked by a professional at as soon as possible.

  • Why is my engine overheating and what should I do right now?

An overheating engine can be alarming, but don’t panic. Turn off the A/C first, and if the temperature keeps climbing pull over safely and shut off the engine. Let it cool completely before opening the hood. Once it’s safe, call AAA or another tow service, or give us a call and we’ll walk you through getting it seen safely. Continuing to drive an overheating engine can cause serious and costly damage.

  • What are signs that my car’s cooling system needs to be looked at?

Your car gives you several warning signs when something is off with the cooling system. Watch for a temperature gauge creeping into the red, steam coming from under the hood, a sweet smell that could indicate a coolant leak, or your heater suddenly blowing cool or cold air. Cooling system issues can lead to a overheating engine and serious damage fast.

All-Season

All-Season tires are versatile and suitable for warm and cool climates, but not recommended for extreme hot or cold weather conditions because of specific rubber components.

All-Weather

Like their name suggests, all-weather tires are versatile and can perform well in a variety of weather conditions and can be severe snow-rated.

All-Terrain

With bigger treads than traditional all-season tires, all-terrain tires allow for both on and off-roading capabilities.

Winter

Winter tires are manufactured to perform well in snow, ice, sleet and other cold weather conditions. Winter tires are typically soft, with an intricate grooved tread pattern — made for holding compacted snow and creating traction — and are severe snow-rated.
