Helpful Hints

Components of your vehicle’s exhaust system

Your vehicle’s exhaust system is made up of multiple components. All must be in perfect condition to work well, so make sure your exhaust repair shop does a detailed inspection.

  • Exhaust manifold — Collects exhaust gasses from the engine and routes to the catalytic converter
  • Catalytic converter — Converts some harmful emissions into carbon dioxide and water
  • Exhaust pipe — Carries the cleaner exhaust gasses to the muffler
  • Muffler — Reduces the noise of combustion and expulsion of emissions
  • Tailpipe — Carries exhaust away from your vehicle

Common problems with the muffler and exhaust system

Your car or truck may need repairs to the muffler or exhaust system if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Louder exhaust sounds than usual
  • Ticking sound on a cold start-up
  • Clunking from the muffler
  • Engine rattling or misfiring
  • Dangling or dragging tailpipe
  • Condensation dripping from the exhaust pipe
  • An unusual exhaust smell

How long does it take to replace a muffler?

While the amount of time it takes to replace a muffler depends on the extent of the damage, most professional auto repair shops should take no more than an hour. Any additional repairs needed for other parts of the exhaust system — such as the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, or catalytic converter — will lengthen the time to repair.

All-Season

All-Season tires are versatile and suitable for warm and cool climates, but not recommended for extreme hot or cold weather conditions because of specific rubber components.

All-Weather

Like their name suggests, all-weather tires are versatile and can perform well in a variety of weather conditions and can be severe snow-rated.

All-Terrain

With bigger treads than traditional all-season tires, all-terrain tires allow for both on and off-roading capabilities.

Winter

Winter tires are manufactured to perform well in snow, ice, sleet and other cold weather conditions. Winter tires are typically soft, with an intricate grooved tread pattern — made for holding compacted snow and creating traction — and are severe snow-rated.
