“Always take your time, think outside of the box, and, don’t get stuck on a little problem.”
These are the three pieces of advice that ASE-certified Master Tech Troy Hawkes of our Scarborough, Maine, location passes on to any new tech. This advice stems from years of experience as a Master Tech who is blessed with the uncanny ability to solve problems that have eluded others before him.
Two other auto repair shops couldn’t figure out what was causing a vehicle’s engine to misfire, and after several attempts to diagnose and repair, the vehicle’s owner brought it to Troy. Following the advice above, Troy examined the situation and uncovered the problem. A previous replacement of an intake gasket had inadvertently moved the harness to the other engine. This was causing the misfire that other techs were unable to diagnose.
The constant challenges and problem solving that comes with being a Master Tech is what Troy enjoys – no two days are the same. “My passion is cars. It always has been and always will be,” he tells us. “If I don’t know what’s going, you can be sure that I will figure it out and fix it.”
Troy’s interest in cars sparked at a young age. His dad is an avid collector and had Troy out working on his car collection with him. By the time Troy turned seven, he was working with his dad to restore cars. The collecting bug has nibbled at Troy a little bit but it’s nothing like his dad’s collection, “I’ve only got a few, nothing like his.”
The snow on the ground might still be melting at this moment but Troy’s already thinking of summer. As this New England winter wraps up, Troy is daydreaming of long days at Sebago Lake, where he can often be found with his family on their pontoon boat. Did we mention he’s got his eye on a new boat?
